Home Based Business Skills
You have a terrific idea for a home business, and it's just perfect for you. You are excited about the prospect of working from home, the smiles from your family and friends when you can say "I started my own business, get to work at home and take care of my family, and best of all I'm earning a significant income."

That is a truly wonderful moment in your life, and one to be savored.

There isn't any reason why you can't get from Point A (the perfect home business idea for you) to Point B (your home business is established and you're seeing some profit) IF you've been thoughtful and followed the proper steps to make sure that your business is one that is viable, logical, and one that you possess the skills and knowledge to start and run.

It's hard work, and some people just are not cut out for it.

The successful entrepreneur needs many skills, which include business skills and know-how, to character traits and personality aspects. These skills and traits include:

Strong Sales & Marketing Skills: able to determine what you are going to sell, who you are going to sell it to, and how much you are going to sell it for, able to determine where the people are that may buy from you, and how to reach those people, not afraid to call/email/fax/personal visit...

Financial: able to honestly calculate how much it will take to start the business, run the business, how long before profit will be seen, able to set a fair price for products or services rendered, doesn't get carried away with purchasing too many or over-priced supplies and furnishings for the business, talk to an accountant, and a lawyer if needed...

Self-motivation skills: avoid procrastinating, work without a boss or manager directing you...

Technical skills: be a quick learner, don't be afraid to take courses to advance your technical skills, good with computers, Internet, typical software (depends on your business) which might include QuickBooks, Microsoft Office and the Internet...

Multi-tasking: able to do more than one thing at a time seamlessly, avoid frustration while working, thinking ahead and outside the box...

Flexible Attitude: ability to change plan smoothly, handle issues and crisis when they arise, creative thinker who can "go with the flow" without getting overly frustrated...

Organization: files, documents, projects, bills, receipts, letters, work orders, computer files and folders, work supplies...

Time management skills:schedule a work routine, ignore distractions, work during work-time and clean/play/etc during other times, stay on-task no matter how bored...

Administration skills: make strong decisions, be prepared to do all the billing, paperwork, filing, organizing and keeping track of all documents you'll need at tax time, A/R, A/P...

Self discipline and control: the ability to control your behavior and stick with what you should be doing, taking care of filing a pile of paperwork and ignore the TV, fridge, phone, keep working on a project even though it may be very tedious work...

Starting your own business isn't easy, and you will have to work hard, but your rewards will more than make up for all the hard work. While having these skills and traits might not ensure the success of your business, they can sure make things a whole lot easier on you, and allow you to concentrate more on reaching your goals.
